About the role

Psychology Graduate Teaching Assistant – Torfaen

Urgently Needed – September 2026 Start

Are you a Psychology graduate looking to start a career in education and make a genuine difference to children and young people with Additional Learning Needs (ALN)?

Do you have an interest in Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), PMLD, behaviour, emotional development or supporting young people with complex needs?

A specialist school in the Torfaen area is looking for an enthusiastic and committed Psychology Graduate Teaching Assistant to join their team from September 2026. This is an excellent opportunity for a Psychology graduate to gain valuable hands-on experience within a specialist ALN setting while developing a long-term career in education.

As a Psychology Graduate Teaching Assistant, you will provide 1:1 and small-group support, helping pupils develop their learning, communication, emotional regulation, confidence and independence.

You will support pupils with a range of additional learning needs, including Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD), Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), complex learning needs and associated communication and sensory needs.

Your Psychology background will be particularly valuable when supporting pupils with ASC, PMLD and other complex needs. You will develop an understanding of individual behaviour, communication and emotional needs, while learning how to adapt your approach to help each pupil engage and make progress.

Working alongside teachers and experienced support staff, you will help pupils access learning and engage positively with the school environment. This role provides an excellent opportunity to apply your degree knowledge in a practical setting while developing valuable experience within specialist education.

The school provides a structured, supportive and nurturing environment for pupils with additional learning needs and offers excellent opportunities for graduates considering careers in education, psychology, pastoral support or specialist teaching.

What we're looking for

  • A degree in Psychology or a related subject
  • A genuine interest in supporting children and young people with ALN
  • An interest in Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), PMLD and complex learning needs
  • An understanding of psychology, behaviour, communication or emotional development
  • Experience working with children or young people is desirable but not essential
  • A calm, patient and consistent approach
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships
  • Resilience and the ability to adapt your approach to individual pupils
  • A willingness to learn and develop within a specialist education setting
  • A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle may be required depending on the school

What we offer

In return, you will receive:

  • £92.56 – £108.56 per day, depending on experience
  • Urgent September 2026 start available
  • Full-time hours, 8:30am – 3:30pm, Monday to Friday
  • Valuable experience supporting pupils with ALN, ASC and PMLD
  • Experience working within a specialist education setting
  • High-quality CPD and ongoing professional development
  • Ongoing support from a dedicated education consultant
  • Weekly PAYE payments and pension contributions
  • A potential pathway into a long-term career within education
