The Role of an SEN Teaching Assistant in Cwmbran

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will support primary-aged pupils within a specialist ALN provision based within a mainstream school. You will help learners overcome barriers to education, develop social and communication skills, and build confidence both inside and outside the classroom.

Working closely with teachers and support staff, you will play a key role in creating a positive, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment where every pupil can thrive.

SEN Teaching Assistant Responsibilities

You may support pupils with a variety of additional learning needs and special educational needs, including:

  • MLD – Moderate Learning Difficulties
  • SLD – Severe Learning Difficulties
  • ASC – Autism Spectrum Condition
  • SEMH – Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs

As part of the role, you will:

  • Provide one-to-one support and small group interventions
  • Assist with classroom learning activities and daily routines
  • Adapt resources to meet individual pupil requirements
  • Support pupils with communication, emotional regulation, and behaviour
  • Encourage independence, confidence, and participation in learning
  • Build strong relationships with pupils, families, and school staff
  • Work collaboratively within both specialist and mainstream learning environments
