The Role of an SEN Teaching Assistant

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will support pupils with a variety of additional learning needs across both primary and secondary age groups. You will work closely with experienced teachers and specialist staff to help pupils access learning, build confidence, develop independence, and achieve positive outcomes both inside and outside the classroom.

SEN Teaching Assistant Responsibilities

You may support pupils with a range of Special Educational Needs and Additional Learning Needs, including:

• Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
• ADHD
• Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
• Moderate and Severe Learning Difficulties (MLD & SLD)
• Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)
• Sensory Processing Needs
• Physical and complex learning needs

As part of the role, you will:

• Provide one-to-one support and small-group interventions
• Assist pupils to access personalised learning programmes
• Support classroom learning and daily routines
• Encourage communication, independence, and social development
• Promote positive behaviour using consistent support strategies
• Adapt learning resources to meet individual pupil needs
• Support pupils throughout the school day, including transitions and outdoor learning where appropriate
• Build positive relationships with pupils, families, teachers, and wider professionals
• Help create a safe, structured, and engaging learning environment

• CACHE Level 2, CACHE Level 3, or equivalent qualifications (desirable but not essential)
• A willingness to learn and develop within specialist education
