SEN Teaching Assistant – Urgently Needed
Are you an experienced Teaching Assistant looking for a new opportunity in Newport? Or perhaps you have experience in care, support work, youth work or education and would like to move into a role supporting children and young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN)?
Vision for Education is urgently recruiting a full-time SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school in Newport.
This is a rewarding opportunity to support pupils with a range of Additional Learning Needs (ALN) and SEN, helping them feel confident, included and able to make progress in school.
You’ll work as part of a supportive team alongside teachers and experienced support staff, providing practical and emotional support throughout the school day.
The Role
As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you’ll support pupils across primary and secondary age groups, helping them access their education and develop their confidence and independence.
Your day-to-day responsibilities may include:
- Providing 1:1 and small-group support
- Supporting pupils with classroom activities and learning
- Helping pupils follow personalised learning programmes
- Encouraging communication, independence and social development
- Supporting pupils with emotional regulation and positive behaviour
- Helping with transitions, routines and changes throughout the school day
- Adapting learning resources to suit individual needs
- Building positive and trusting relationships with pupils
- Creating a calm, safe and supportive learning environment
- Working closely with teachers and other school staff to support individual pupils
You may work with pupils with a range of needs, including:
- Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
- ADHD
- Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)
- Moderate and Severe Learning Difficulties (MLD/SLD)
- Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)
- Sensory processing needs
- Physical and complex learning needs
Who We're Looking For
We’re looking for someone who is patient, reliable and genuinely passionate about supporting children and young people.
Previous SEN or ALN experience would be an advantage, but it isn’t essential. Your experience could come from a range of backgrounds, including:
- Teaching Assistant or Learning Support Assistant roles
- Care or support work
- Residential childcare
- Youth work
- Sports coaching
- Psychology
- Health and social care
- Education
You’ll need to be:
- Caring, patient and approachable
- Confident working with children and young people
- Able to build strong professional relationships
- Calm and consistent when managing challenging behaviour
- Understanding of individual needs and different learning styles
- Positive and resilient
- Reliable and committed to working as part of a team
- Keen to develop a career within education or specialist support
A CACHE Level 2, CACHE Level 3 or equivalent qualification is desirable, but relevant experience will also be considered.
