SEN Teaching Assistant – Year 1 – Full Time – ASAP

Vision for Education is looking to appoint a full-time SEN Teaching Assistant to join our successful supply team and work within a welcoming primary school in the TS12 area.

This is a full-time role, working Monday to Friday, supporting the needs of several SEN children within a Year 1 class. The role will involve a combination of general classroom Teaching Assistant responsibilities and 1:1 support, depending on the individual needs of the children.

The successful candidate will provide nurturing, consistent, and individualised support, helping pupils to develop self-regulation, positive behaviours for learning, communication, confidence, and independence.

The role is to start as soon as possible and is expected to be long term for the right person, depending on the needs of the school.

Salary is dependent on experience, training, or qualifications.

The minimum experience, training, or qualifications required for this position is a Level 3 qualification or above in Teaching and Supporting Learning. Previous experience supporting children with SEN, particularly autism, within a primary school setting is highly desirable.

The Role

Working as part of a supportive and enthusiastic teaching team, the desired SEN Teaching Assistant will support several SEN children within a Year 1 classroom, providing a mixture of classroom-based Teaching Assistant support and targeted 1:1 intervention.

Responsibilities may include:

• Providing consistent support to several SEN children within the Year 1 classroom.
• Providing 1:1 support where required, based on individual pupil needs.
• Supporting children with self-regulation and emotional regulation.
• Helping pupils to recognise and manage their emotions and responses.
• Supporting children with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and their individual needs.
• Helping pupils to develop positive behaviours for learning.
• Encouraging children to remain focused, engaged, and motivated during lessons.
• Supporting communication, social development, confidence, and independence.
• Providing reassurance, encouragement, and emotional support throughout the school day.
• Supporting classroom routines, transitions, and changes in activity.
• Promoting positive behaviour and helping children develop appropriate strategies for managing challenges.
• Adapting activities and resources where appropriate to enable children to access learning.
• Supporting pupils with their individual learning needs, targets, and support plans.
• Working closely with the class teacher and wider school team to ensure a consistent approach.
• Helping to create a safe, inclusive, nurturing, and stimulating learning environment.
• Encouraging pupils to develop greater independence and become confident learners.

The successful candidate will be patient, caring, proactive, and adaptable, with the ability to build positive and trusting relationships with children who have a range of additional needs.

Experience supporting autism, emotional regulation, sensory needs, and behaviours for learning would be particularly advantageous.

Requirements

To be considered for the SEN Teaching Assistant position, you will:

• Hold a minimum Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools.
• Have experience working as a Teaching Assistant within a primary school setting.
• Have experience supporting children with SEN and additional needs.
• Experience supporting children with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) is highly desirable.
• Have an understanding of self-regulation and emotional regulation.
• Have experience supporting positive behaviour and developing behaviours for learning.
• Be confident providing both classroom-based and 1:1 support.
• Have a genuine desire to support children with their individual learning and development.
• Be patient, nurturing, and able to build positive relationships with pupils.
• Be able to work effectively alongside the class teacher and wider school team.
• Demonstrate a positive, flexible, and child-centred approach.
• Be available to work full time, Monday to Friday.
• Be available to start as soon as possible and commit to a long-term placement.
