Working Hours: 8:30am – 3:30pm | Monday – Friday

Teaching Assistant – Urgent Start

Vision for Education is urgently looking for a full-time Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school in Newport.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, Support Worker, Residential Support Worker or graduate looking to build their experience working with children and young people in a specialist education setting.

You’ll work alongside teachers and experienced support staff to help pupils access their learning, develop their independence and feel confident and supported throughout the school day.

The Role

As a Teaching Assistant in Newport, you’ll support pupils across primary and secondary age groups, helping them overcome barriers to learning and make progress both academically and personally.

Your day-to-day responsibilities may include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support
  • Helping pupils engage with classroom learning and activities
  • Supporting individual learning programmes and targets
  • Encouraging communication, confidence and independence
  • Supporting positive behaviour and emotional regulation
  • Helping pupils manage transitions and changes to their routine
  • Adapting activities and resources to meet individual needs
  • Building positive and trusting relationships with pupils
  • Creating a calm, safe and supportive learning environment
  • Working closely with teachers and other members of the school team

You may support pupils with a range of SEN and ALN needs, including:

  • Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
  • ADHD
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)
  • Moderate and Severe Learning Difficulties (MLD and SLD)
  • Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)
  • Sensory processing needs
  • Physical and complex learning needs

Who We're Looking For

This role would suit someone with experience working with children or young people who is keen to develop their career within SEN and ALN education.

Your previous experience could come from education, care, support work, residential childcare, youth work, sports coaching, psychology, health or social care.

Previous SEN or ALN experience is beneficial but is not essential. We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Caring, patient and approachable
  • Confident working with children and young people
  • Able to build positive and professional relationships
  • Calm and consistent when supporting challenging behaviour
  • Understanding of different learning and communication needs
  • Passionate about helping pupils develop and make progress
  • Reliable and committed to working as part of a team
  • Keen to gain further experience within specialist education

A CACHE Level 2, CACHE Level 3 or equivalent qualification is desirable but not essential.
