The Teaching Assistant Role

You may support pupils with a variety of Additional Learning Needs and Special Educational Needs, including:

  • Additional Learning Needs (ALN)
  • Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
  • Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD)
  • Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD)
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs (SEMH)
  • Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (EBD)
  • Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)

As a Teaching Assistant in Newport, your responsibilities may include:

  • Providing one-to-one support and small-group interventions
  • Assisting teachers with lesson delivery and classroom activities
  • Supporting pupils to access learning and remain engaged throughout the school day
  • Adapting resources and activities to meet individual learning needs
  • Supporting communication, social development and emotional wellbeing
  • Promoting positive behaviour and encouraging independence
  • Building positive relationships with pupils, staff and parents/carers
  • Working collaboratively within specialist education settings
