About the role

Y5/6 Teaching Assistant

Location: Darlington
Salary: £90 - £100 per day
Job Type: Full Time
Start Date: October 2026

About the Role

Working in partnership with Northern Lights Learning Trust, Vision for Education are looking to recruit an experienced Teaching Assistant to work on a full-time basis within a welcoming Year 5/6 classroom in the Darlington area.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Teaching Assistant who is committed, enthusiastic, caring, and passionate about supporting children in their learning and development.

You will work within a supportive Year 5/6 setting, helping pupils develop their confidence, independence, communication, social skills, and academic progress through engaging, creative, and age-appropriate activities.

The role will begin in October 2026, with the class transitioning from a Year 3/4 mixed setting to Year 5/6 from November 2026.

This is a full-time position, offering an excellent opportunity for a Teaching Assistant looking to develop their experience within a Key Stage 2 setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the class teacher in providing a safe, inclusive, and stimulating Year 5/6 learning environment.
  • Support pupils' learning and development across the Key Stage 2 curriculum.
  • Assist with engaging whole-class, small-group, and one-to-one learning activities.
  • Support pupils with their literacy, numeracy, and wider curriculum learning.
  • Encourage pupils to develop confidence, independence, and positive relationships.
  • Support pupils during classroom routines, transitions, and activities.
  • Help pupils develop their reading, writing, spelling, grammar, and mathematical skills through age-appropriate activities.
  • Promote positive behaviour using consistent, encouraging, and appropriate strategies.
  • Support pupils with different abilities and individual learning needs.
  • Adapt activities and resources to ensure all pupils can access their learning.
  • Help prepare and organise classroom resources and learning activities.
  • Work collaboratively with the class teacher and wider school team to support pupils' progress.
  • Contribute to creating an inclusive and positive learning environment where every child feels valued.
  • Provide additional support to pupils who may require intervention or targeted assistance.
  • Support pupils in developing the skills and confidence needed as they progress towards the next stage of their education.

What We're Looking For

  • A relevant Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification is desirable.
  • Experience working within a primary school or Key Stage 2 setting is highly desirable.
  • Previous experience supporting children across Key Stage 2, particularly in Years 5 and 6.
  • A genuine passion for supporting children's learning and development.
  • A nurturing, patient, and caring approach.
  • The ability to build positive relationships with children.
  • Good understanding of the primary school curriculum and effective learning strategies.
  • The ability to support children's academic, social, emotional, and personal development.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • The ability to adapt activities and support to meet individual pupils' needs.
  • Flexibility and commitment to working on a full-time basis.

  • Excellent daily rates paid using the PAYE system.
